Augustus Emperor maight authorized the construction of a 7 km-long-road rampart in the 1st century AC. with an honorary value rather than defensive,
The wall surrounded the primitive site of the city bounded by 5 hills and bordered by the Rhône river

To the east, the alignment of the Cours Brillier facades maintains the direction of the rampart. The masonry preserved under the portico of the Médicis building belongs to the western end of the southern curtain wall of the Roman enclosure. The body of the modern tower-porch building marks the site of the rampart's corner tower, which opened with a monumental gateway to a north-south road already identified further south.
Historians generally agree that it was Emperor Augustus who authorized the city of Vienne to build a city wall at the end of the 1st century BC. No doubt he provided imperial funding? But these major works were spread over many years.
This imposing construction remained part of the city's defensive system until the 18th century.
