Founded in the 6th or in the 7th century AC, the Saint-André-le-Bas Abbey was one of the most important monastery of Vienne's diocese, during the middle age. Settled on roman base, it overshadowed th junction of the Gère and Rhône river
Le monastère était particulièrement florissant au XIIème siècle et des travaux importants furent menés à cette époque. Les guerres de Religion n'épargnèrent pas son patrimoine, détruisant notamment l'église Saint-Pierre-entre-Juifs qui dépendait de l'abbaye et abritait la communauté paroissiale du quartier.
Affaiblie, l'abbaye fusionna, contre l'avis des derniers moines, avec celle de Saint-Chef (Isère), puis de Saint-Pierre de Vienne en 1780. L'église fut consacrée au culte paroissial et les autres bâtiments vendus. Le cloître fut masqué par des constructions qui obstruèrent ses arcades jusque dans les années 1930.
